IMPORTANT PRODUCT NOTICE: Rx Refill Patient Matching Update

Dear Centricity™ Practice Solution and Centricity EMR Customers:

We strive to automate routine tasks to alleviate the manual administrative effort required to manage patients.  With that goal in mind, we created logic in Centricity Practice Solution (CPS) and Centricity EMR (CEMR) to reduce the number of unmatched patients requiring manual reconciliation when processing electronic refill requests.  We are sending this notice to inform you of an issue recently discovered with the patient matching algorithm used when processing electronic prescription refill requests.  This issue was introduced during the CPS 12.2 and CEMR 9.10 release and all subsequent releases.

If your organization manages multiple patient charts for a single patient across multiple Locations of Care, then this issue may affect your organization.  If your organization does not manage multiple patient charts for a single patient across multiple Locations of Care, this will not affect your organization.

Connecting Providers Forum: Healthcare Is Scorching Its Providers: The Burnout Epidemic

Friday, October 27th – 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm

Provider burnout is at an all-time high. Two thirds of family physicians report at least one element of burnout. Some specialties suffer higher burnout rates than others. Many factors contribute including growing regulatory pressures, inefficient EHRs, emphasis on RVUs, poor workflows, and work-life imbalance. Dr. Steven Waldren, Director of the Alliance for eHealth Innovation of the American Academy of Family Physicians will discuss the impact of burnout on healthcare providers and ways to avoid it. We will then have an open forum with GE Healthcare exploring how Centricity can assist providers to lessen the burden of EHRs on burnout.

What to Eat: Po’ Boys

What to Eat: Po' Boys

When in New Orleans, Po’ Boys are a must eat. These sandwiches were first created to feed striking streetcar workers in 1929, many of whom were unpaid, picketing laborers free of charge (hence the name). Po’ Boys are served on crusty French bread and filled with roast beef and fried seafood (typically shrimp). Popular dressings are lettuce, tomato, pickles, and mayo. Johnny’s Po’ Boys is the best place to try these iconic sandwiches. Operating in the French Quarter since 1950, this family-owned lunch counter has nearly 50 different Po’ Boys.

SCAM ALERT – FRAUDULENT HOTEL ROOM RESERVATIONS

Dear CHUG Members:
It has been brought to our attention that a third-party housing company, Exhibitor Housing Services (EHS), has been contacting exhibitors and claiming to be in charge of the sleeping room block for the CHUG Fall 2017 Conference at the Sheraton in New Orleans. This is a fraudulent claim and they are NOT affiliated with Centricity Healthcare Users Group (CHUG), Beatty Group, or the Sheraton.

We will never call you to book your hotel room. To guarantee your room reservation, please do so during registration. CLICK HERE for the link to the CHUG Fall 2017 registration website.

Third-party companies, such as Exhibition Housing Services (EHS), are fraudulent and reach out to several conference attendees and exhibitors each year. Per Google, we found several other conference that have also been solicited by EHS. See here for a couple of articles – Affiliate Summit, AAPL and AED.

Do NOT send any personal information, including credit card information to EHS or to any other unknown vendor.

If you receive an e-mail from EHS or have any concerns, please contact Beatty Group at CHUG@beattygroup.com.

Explore Bourbon Street at CHUG Fall 2017

What to Do: Bourbon Street

It’s no secret that the French Quarter is the place to party! With many clubs, DJs, and bars- the celebration opportunities are endless.  Though what’s often gone unnoticed is Bourbon Street’s history which dates back to the early 18th century.  The street is especially rich with historic venues, social tales and iconic buildings. “Rue Bourbon” is located at the heart of the French Quarter extending 13 blocks from Canal St. to Esplanade Avenue.  Regardless of the reason, your trip to New Orleans isn’t complete without a visit to Bourbon Street.

What to Eat: Gumbo

Enjoy some Louisiana Gumbo at CHUG Fall 2017Gumbo has come to be one of the best examples of the multicultural melting pot that has made New Orleans what it is. The dish is best described as a type of stew served over rice.

Everyone has their own rendition as some use seafood instead of chicken or sausage instead of ham. It’s all a matter of personal preference and taste- of course!

When in NOLA, locals suggest either Mr. B’s Bistro for their “Gumbo Ya-Ya’ or the Gumbo Shop for their famous seafood okra gumbo.

Comments by lead author Tait Shanafelt, MD (Mayo Clinic) and Cheryl Zapata (Texas Back Institute)

Written by  | Featured on Spine Universe

Use of electronic health records (EHRs) and computerized physician order entry (CPOE) may lead to lower physician satisfaction and higher rates of professional burnout, according to large nationwide study published in the July issue ofMayo Clinic Proceedings.

“Electronic health records hold great promise for enhancing coordination of care and improving quality of care,” said lead author Tait Shanafelt, MD, Director of the Mayo Clinic Department of Medicine Program on Physician Well-being. “In their current form and implementation, however, they have had a number of unintended negative consequences, including reducing efficiency, increasing clerical burden, and increasing the risk of burnout for physicians.”

NEW! Products & Services Resource Guide

The CHUG Board is very excited to announce the eagerly anticipated launch of the new Products & Services resource guide!

WHAT IS IT? A searchable database of reputable healthcare products, services and solutions, all conveniently located on the CHUG website.

WHY? We wanted to facilitate a more efficient search process for users seeking solutions.

How it works:
Vendors participating in the new program will each receive a spot in the resource database. The more vendors who participate, the more robust the database becomes.

We are encouraging vendors to provide educational materials about their products, white papers, videos, demonstrations, and an interactive calendar of their upcoming events.

To use the database, simply navigate to the new “Products & Services” tab and click on the categories you would like to search. The results will be filtered based on the companies currently assigned to that category.

Click on each company logo to explore their offerings and learn more about their product or service.

It’s as simple as that!

As always, feel free to contact us with any questions.

Best regards, The CHUG Team

Message from GE Healthcare:

Dear Centricity Users,
Beginning in 2015, each quarter the GE Ambulatory Practice Solutions Engineering Team reserves two days to work on a selected set of small enhancements that will delight customers and improve customers’ experience with the Centricity products. These reserved days are called Delighter Days and the enhancements are referred to as Customer Delighters.

The CHUG Board participated in the inaugural Delighter Days in April, with some members visiting GE sites in Hillsboro, OR and Plano, TX to work directly with Product and Engineering teams.

The CHUG Board has now partnered with GE on the Delighter Days program and we want YOU to determine which Customer Delighters will be completed on the next Delighter Days. The Delighter Candidates in this survey were sourced from the GE Services, Sales, Installation, Engineering, Product Management and Account Development teams based on repeated requests they hear from customers.

Please complete this survey and rate the candidates based on how important/valuable they are to your organization. The candidates rated as most important to the greatest number of organizations will have priority on the next Delighter Days in July. Remember, Delighters are small enhancements that are completed and tested in two days or less.

DON’T DELAY the survey closes at MIDNIGHT ON JULY 10TH!

Is the Future Now? Healthcare of Tomorrow Today
Since the adoption of legislation around Meaningful Use, Healthcare IT has been moving at light speed to catch up and surpass the technology of the day. Are we fulfilling the promises of an integrated healthcare world? Will the onset of ICD-10 be a step forward or a step back? Am I ready for medical wearable? Will my patients engage in their care? All of these questions relate back to the speed at which healthcare is moving, but are we and can we keep up?

Here are some topics of interest, but don’t limit yourself to these….
- What tools and workflows are you using to engage patients?
- How are you preparing for Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances?
- What reports are you using to increase efficiency?
- How is your office planning to utilize wearable data?
- Techniques to increase IT department productivity and efficiency.
- Change management techniques.
- Training techniques/systems.
- How do you prioritize in a world where every project is a high priority?
- How do you keep your Clinical Decision Support information up to date? Organized?
- How are you communicating with Health Information Exchanges?
- What interoperability are you doing?
- How do you take the pain out of coding with ICD-10?
- Customize versus Standardize? How do you balance them?
- Any other topic that would be of interest to Centricity EMR or PM users.

WHY PRESENT?
- You don’t mind being up in front of other people.
- It is so nice to share your knowledge with others.
- Networking is a good thing!
- Boost the profile of yourself and your organization.
- You WILL get a FANCY RIBBON to add to your name badge that says “SPEAKER”!
- And of course, all approved sessions will receive 2 discounted conference registration fees.

CHUG UPDATE

Good Day CHUG Community,
The CHUG Board hopes all of you enjoyed CHUG at Centricity Live. If you missed it, we encourage you to join us for our next conference this October in New York City.

As I start to settle back into my routine, I think back and am struck by how much we have collectively accomplished and how far we have to go. The CHUG Board spent a great deal of time discussing how to ensure we are properly informing our membership about everything that we do on your behalf. Transparency is a big part of Advocacy because it allows us to build trust in one another. Our goal over the months leading up to our conference in NYC will be to send out monthly updates from the CHUG Board.

On Friday May 1st, the second day of the CHUG at Centricity LIVE conference, the CHUG Board was able to sit down with Mr. Jan De Witte and members of his leadership team. We spoke frankly, openly, and honestly about the struggles all of our members have encountered over the past year. We did note, although there have been struggles, recently it seems as if the corner is being turned and things are starting to get better. Mr. De Witte acknowledged there is still much work to be done to build back up the trust, but gave a firm commitment to stay involved in the process. He further committed to working on a messaging and communication process that will allow GE to become much more transparent benefitting all of their customers.

The CHUG Board looks forward to working with Mr. De Witte’s team to implement this plan in the coming months.

Another important meeting at CHUG centered on our discussions with SureScripts. As many of you may already know, Surescripts has spun out their Care Coordination solution under the brand of Kryptiq. The Patient Portal, Document Management, and ePrescribing remain under the name of Surescripts Enterprise Solutions. Mr. Paul Uhrig, EVP of the SureScripts Enterprise Services division, has assured us of a similar transparent communication and messaging path. We hope to implement this in the coming months.

If you were unable to attend the conference or missed the opening session, I spoke about “CHUG being what you make it”. I encouraged everyone to find that one thing you can take back to your office or clinic or hospital- one innovation, workflow change, new product or idea that will make the all the difference to you or your physicians, nurses, biller, or front desk staff. Hopefully you were able to find and accomplish your one thing, if not, there is still time. If you have not already done so, please send us your one thing to myonething@centricityusers.com or #mychugonething.

All of this is just the beginning, 2015 is about Advocacy and we need your help. Sign up for a committee and volunteer to be part of this vibrant community, we need you. If at any time you would like to discuss something with us or have a question, email the CHUG Board at chugboard@centricityusers.com. Thank you for your time and attention, I look forward to seeing all of you in New York City on October 1-3, 2015 for the Fall CHUG Conference.

Respectfully,

The CHUG Board of Directors

February 11, 2015

Mr. Jan De Witte
President and CEO Healthcare IT and Performance Solution
GE Healthcare
540 W Northwest Highway
Barrington, IL
60010-3076

Dear Mr. De Witte,

This coming April the CHUG Board will be traveling to Orlando, FL to participate in the first ever CHUG @ Centricity Live. We would like to take this opportunity to have an open and honest dialogue with you and some of your leaders about the state of the product, interactions with the GE team, and commitment for the future. Thus, the CHUG Board respectfully requests a meeting with yourself, Jon Zimmerman, Peter Kinhan, Clarissa Beyah-Talyor, David Hale and Evren Eryurek.

As you may recall, two years ago, the CHUG Board met with you in Las Vegas, NV and expressed concerns about the direction of the product. In the past two years, some of these concerns have materialized. And while there have been many efforts by the GE team to mitigate these issues, we remain in an urgent situation that has placed us all in jeopardy. This situation includes particular challenges related to interactions between CHUG and GE, severe product quality issues, and overall problems with customer service and support.

It is our sincere hope, that as a result of this meeting, you will have a candid picture of the product issues we face, the impact of those issues on your customers, and the needs we have to continue repairing the fragile relationship between GE, the CHUG Board, and the thousands of customers we represent.

Thank you for your time and consideration in addressing this matter, we look forward to your prompt response.

Respectfully,
Etan M. Walls, CISSP

Thank you for your continued engagement with GE and for reaching out to me to share your concerns. I accept your invitation to meet in person at the upcoming CLIVE meeting this spring.

I realize we have some work to do, and that you are engaged with many members of my leadership team on several issues. I welcome the opportunity to listen to your concerns first-hand, get your feedback on the progress we are making and counsel on the additional steps we need to take.

Please know my leadership team and I appreciate your advocacy on behalf of many GE Healthcare IT customers. I look forward to meeting with you in April.

Message from the CHUG Board

Good Day CHUG Community,

This past weekend the CHUG Board of Directors met with members of the GE Healthcare IT Senior Leadership team at our quarterly board meeting. We worked collectively and collaboratively with the GE team to advocate on your behalf by voicing your concerns regarding Centricity Practice Solution and Centricity EMR.

The conversation centered on the following themes:

• System Integrity – Outages of CQR, etc
• Regulatory Compliance – PQRS, MU, moving targets
• Urgency to Fix Long Standing Items
• Improving Communication Content & Frequency
• Engaging Users in the Product Development Process

The following items were important to note:

• GE Senior Leadership continues to be devoted to hearing and understanding challenges surrounding CPS and CEMR.
• GE has recently restructured its Engineering Teams. System integrity and producing quality releases are vitally important to this new team.
• Regulatory compliance has become a moving target, and GE is working with key regulatory entities to ensure their customers have the most up-to-date information as quickly as possible.

As a result, the following action items have been created:

• On February 11th, 2015 the CHUG Board sent a letter to Mr. Jan De Witte, President and CEO of GE Healthcare IT, requesting a meeting to discuss and advocate for the needs of the users (request and response attached). We look forward to meeting with Mr. De Witte and members of his leadership team at CHUG @ Centricity Live.
• Based upon your feedback, the CHUG Board has developed a list of 15 items that have been long standing issues. In March, we hope to communicate the full list to you, including resolution dates promised by GEHCIT.
• The CHUG Board will continue to work closely with GEHCIT to deliver needed information in a timely way
• As a community, CHUG will start to become increasingly active in lobbying the US government for regulatory relief. Please keep an eye out for further communications.

These are all steps in the right direction as we continue to advocate on the behalf of users. Please continue to reach out to the CHUG Board to have your voice heard. Get involved in one of our many committees, there is so much good we can do together.

On a personal note, as the new President of the CHUG Board of Directors, I hope we are able to continue this initial momentum into concrete improvements for all GE Centricity users. With open, honest, transparent, and collaborative communication from all stakeholders, I believe we will be able to realize amazing improvements and innovations.

Thank you for your time and attention, I look forward to seeing all of you in Orlando, FL at CHUG at Centricity Live and in New York City on October 1st-3rd, 2015 for the Fall CHUG.

Respectfully,
Etan M. Walls, CISSP
President, Centricity Healthcare User Group Board of Directors

Get Involved – CMS potential EHR Incentive Changes for 2015

Notice from the CHUG Board:

Dear CHUG Members,

Are your providers tired, overworded and struggling to meet meaningful use measures? Have staff starting asking “What is the point”?

Yesterday CMS announced a potential EHR Incentive Program Change for 2015! These proposed changes will reduce program complexity and ease the administrative burden on physician practices.

The CHUG Board is strongly recommending that you DON’T WAIT – GET INVOLVED….if you did not respond before NOW IS THE TIME! Reach out to Congress and let your voice be heard. MGMA members can also use this link.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) intends to engage in rulemaking this spring to help ensure providers continue to meet meaningful use requirements.

In response to input from health care providers and other stakeholders, CMS is considering the following changes to the Medicare and Medicaid Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Programs.

  1. Shortening the 2015 reporting period to 90 days to address provider concerns about their ability to fully deploy 2014 Edition software.
  2. Realigning hospital reporting periods to the calendar year to allow eligible hospitals more time to incorporate 2014 Edition software into their workflows and to better align with other quality programs.
  3. Modifying other aspects of the program to match long-term goals, reduce complexity, and lessen providers’ reporting burden.

Please note: these modifications must still be finalized through formal rulemaking, expected to occur this spring. While CMS intends to pursue these changes through rulemaking, they will NOT be included in the pending Stage 3 proposed rule. CMS intends to limit the scope of the pending proposed rule to Stage 3 and meaningful use in 2017 and beyond.

For further information, please read Dr. Conway’s blog on the announcement. For more information on the EHR Incentive programs visit CMS.

Donating Leftover Food to Charitable Causes

Original article posted on 11.04.14 by Ross Beatty http://www.beattygroup.com/donating-leftover-food-to-charitable-causes-2014-11-04/

One thing that seems to come up over and over again in the conference planning world is what happens to all of the leftover food? Does the hotel repurpose it for the hotel staff? Does it get thrown away? It seems like this is an area where there is a huge amount of waste.

We recently encountered this situation at the Centricity Healthcare User Group (CHUG) conference that our company help organize this fall and found ourselves wondering if there was something we could do. The first night of the event there was a catered welcome reception at the hotel. One of the events that we had set-up was a do it yourself cupcake decorating station. Well as the night progressed, the CHUG Board President, Terri Werner-Brown noticed that there were a lot of cupcakes that had not been touched nor were they going to get decorated. Instead of having the cupcakes go to waste she thought that it would be a nice gesture to see if the cupcakes could be donated. She asked us to contact the hotel and see if it was possible to have the cupcakes donated, which in return we were told was not possible because it was against hotel policy since it was a liability.

The thing is, it is not actually illegal to donate the leftover food, it is just against hotel policy due to their fear of liability for the donation. Many people do not know this but the Bill Emerson Food Donation Act was created to allow people to make donations to the hungry without having to worry about being liable for any harm that may come from the donation.

What does the law do?

The law protects good-faith donors from civil and criminal liability in the event that the product later causes harm to its recipients. The Emerson Act gives uniform protection to food donors who may cross state lines.

Who is protected?

The law protects food donors, including individuals and nonprofit feeding programs that act in good faith. More specifically, the law protects individuals, corporations, partnerships, organizations, associations, government entities, wholesalers, retailers, restaurateurs, caterers, farmers, gleaners, nonprofit agencies, and others.

What sort of food is protected?

The Emerson Act provides protection for food and grocery products that meet all quality and labeling standards imposed by federal, state, and local laws and regulations, even though the food may not be readily marketable due to appearance, age, freshness, grade, size, surplus, or other conditions.

Where can I find a place to donate?

Find a local food bank using the Food Bank Locator on Feeding America’s Web site. You just need to connect the local food bank and the catering firm, they will take care of all the details.

With the state of the current economy, food banks are having difficulty keeping their shelves full in order to help serve the hungry. As event planners we want to know how we can help out, especially when we have food that we could donate.

Next time you want to donate the leftover food from your event the best thing to do is contact event caterer early in the planning process and let them know this is something you want to do. Use the resources that are readily available and last but not least, do not take no for an answer!
